"It Didn't Work For Me..."
It's been a while since I last posted. It's been a busy summer helping clients make a positive change in their lives.
I love nothing more than seeing the change or hearing from clients who have had a successful session.
However, occasionally, I will hear from someone who feels "it didn't work". There's nothing more disappointing; Not just for the client of course, but for me. I don't feel like I've failed, rather than a feeling of discontent.
Now, I will say this is a rare occurrence and I have a LOT of success in my Hypnotherapy work. Sometimes, it may take a little more work or a different approach to overcome the issue.
Whether it's smoking cessation, phobia work or confidence issues, not one approach will work for everyone. This is why it's important for the client to feel comfortable and to arrive with the confidence that what we do in the therapy room will make a difference - Big or small.
Let's take smoking as an example. I ask clients to refrain from smoking at LEAST a couple of hours before they come and see me. It doesn't always happen. Maybe it's a subconscious action that after they see me, that'll be it, so "I'll have my final one".
The reason I ask smokers not to smoke is to show their determination that they DO want to stop. It gives me an idea of how committed they are. During the session, I ask them to help themselves by not 'testing' it afterwards to see if it's taken affect. This undoes all the work that's been put in during the session.
Those who return for a follow-up, I ask them WHY they smoked. I hear "I just wanted to try it" more than I'd expect.
There is no failure in Hypnotherapy. If you have the mindset that "it won't work" or Hypnotherapy is a magic spell of some kind, then you're doing it injustice.
Hypnotherapy is a VERY strong tool to help with issues. But, like most therapies and medicines, what works for one person may not work for another. Don't dismiss it.
